Money & Banking: The only bank on the island is in Moyogalpa (1 hour from Balgue) and the ATM there accepts VISA debit cards. You can cash travellers cheques at the bank but the exchange rate is terrible. You can take cash on your visa card at "Mini Super" at the top of the main road in Moyogalpa, but again the rate is terrible.

Health: There are medical clinics and pharmacies in Balgue but the main hospitals are in Alta Gracia and Moyogalpa. There is an emergency boat from Moyogalpa on-call 24hrs in case the patient needs to be transported to the mainland.

Communication: There is a slow internet service operating from Balgue, but it is unreliable. There is good higher speed internet in Moyogalpa. You can buy top up cards for your mobile in Balgue. International calls can be made from Moyogalpa too.

Practical: Useful items to bring on a trip to Ometepe include flashlight, insect repellent, sturdy boots and a rain coat or umbrella if you visit between May and October.
