Hiking
There are a number of great established hikes to be found on Ometepe and a great number more un-established hikes for the intrepid explorer. Here is a selection but contact us for more details and options.
NOTE: Dont diminish your experience by not taking a guide. Guides are very economically priced and offer a chance to engage with a local and add added diversity and interest to your walk. It's also a way of offering meaningfull employment to people who generally have none. We can of course supply guides and we dont take any commision, all the money goes to the guide!!!
NOTE: We can arrange packed lunches for your day trips!!!!!
Volcano Maderas
The classic island trek and the main reason tourists come to Ometepe. This is a 5-6 hour return trek up a muddy path to the volcanic crater lake in a cloud forest. If that doesnt get your blood flowing then you're dead.
Start from Balgue, go through Finca Magdelana and follow the path to the top. You will need a guide for this trek which we can arrange. Typically costs $5 per person but groups can negotiate rates. Trekking through a cloud forest is a unique experience and this is a unique trek. Savour the hike by taking a beer at the finca on the way down.
Volcano Concepcion
An arduos trek up a steep active volcano. 8-10 hours return depending on fitness. Depending on how active the volcano is depends on wether ths trek is worthwhile or not. Recently, due to rain this trek has become unstable so it is also time of year dependent. However, nearing the summit you can expect the earth to get hot! Clouds of sulphuric steam to choke you and astonishing views. Hard work but worth the effort!
You need a guide for this trek which we can easily arrange.
San Ramon Waterfalls
This walk starts from Merida and takes you to a stunning waterfall. It can be tackled by horse back too!
Petroglyph Walk
This walk starts from Finca Magdelana and takes a couple of hours. Its pretty easy going and of course ends up with a beer at the Finca! I love this walk, its fascinating. There are dozens of fantastic Petroglyphs to see, some extremely ornate and complicated ones too. A nice light day out.
Jerusalem Waterfalls
A wonderfully named waterfall which supplies water to the village of Las Cuchillas. This hike is not oft undertaken and is a real gem. You'll see some village life which hasnt changed for generations on the way up. It will take about 4 hours return from Balgue and again you'll need a guide.
El Por Venir
There is a walk up from Por Venir Hotel at Santa Cruz on the way to Merida which is to a vista overlooking the Isthmus of the island. Given that you can walk up to Totoco and get a better view from higher with a cold beer when you get there its a bit hard to think why you would walk up to Por Venir, though I am told it is beautiful and of course it has no other people there when you get there - and no cold beer......
There are additional options for treks such as walking from Balgue to Merida or even tackling some overnight hikes. Please get in contact with us to discuss other options.
Horse Riding
Horse riding can now be organised from a number of places on Ometepe. You can start from Villa Paraiso on Santa domingo beach, Finca Magdelana or Little Morgans in Madronal. Horse treks are usually taken along the roads and on the beach. Contact us for more details.
