Eating Out, Music, Massage and Yoga
The options arent many but you can get some great social experiences on Ometepe and also enjoy some Massage or Yoga in an amazing and calming setting.
Eating Out - Balgue
Cafe Campestre - As you'd expect me to say, this is by far the best option on Ometepe!
We make fresh food daily, prepared where possible from ingredients grown on our farm or ingredients purchased locally.
We take pride in our food and go to great lengths to ensure high standards in quality and hygiene. You can regularly find Indian Curry's, Thai Curry's, Homemade Italian Patsa's, Eastern food and farm baked Breads and Cakes as well as many other things.
We prepare fresh juices daily from organic farm fruits and supply free chilled filter water.
We also keep cold beers on tap of course!
Cafe Campestre has a very convienient location in Balgue right on the main road and opposite the large Tangerine coloured church and we're the only proper food joint in town! There are other options though and I'll list them below;
Cafe Isabel - Opposite Cafe Campestre. Serve local cuisine, beans and rice, eggs and cheese. They do this well and occasionally there's Naca Tamales. Incidently, if you hear a pig screaming like its being killed, it is. The owners of the Cafe slaughter the pigs in the back yard, the screaming lets people know there's fresh meat for sale.
Caimito - If you're lucky you'll see Caimito on the street. He has a stall he pushes around from which he vends a number of local delicacies. I regularly eat from him. He has meat roast on his grill - some of that pork I was telling you about often, or Beef on the weekend. Its chewy and fresh and it comes in a corn Tortilla and some tacos (deep fried tortilla) and salad and of course, tomato sauce. Its good food on the hoof, but with nowhere to sit down.
Finca Magdelena - Food at the Finca wont get your gastronomic juices flowing. If you've spent any time in Nicaragua then your already bored of the food and the Finca wont dish you anything new. That said, the food is generally OK just keep your expectations at the right level. They do sell cold beer however! And a variety of local juices, some of which can be good and some can be bad. They also sell coffee, and its such a shame its not better coffee. The coffee itself is good, verging on great infact but when made at the Finca it never fullfills its promises. For a great cup of coffee come to Cafe Campestre we brew a great cup! The Finca does have another great view however and is a superb place to head for a beer!!
Eco Hotel Totoco - At the time of writing I dont think Totoco are serving to anyone but guests, which is a shame and will hopefully change soon. Its a long walk up to Totoco but my good, its worth it! The views from Totoco are awesome and the location of their rancho sublime. It is a marvelous place for a beer and the food aint half bad either! Totoco use fresh local ingredients prepared by locals who have flare and imagination! Good food, great location, super people. A must IF they're open.
Eating Out - Madronal to Santa Domingo
Going from Balgue to Madronal the first place is Zoplilote. Its another must see for Ometepe and Saturday nights they do Pizza in a clay oven. However they dont offer any other form of dining at this time.
Little Morgans is an Irish Sports bar on Ometepe! Morgan has cable TV, Pool and a big store of beer and other drinks! He also has a food board and knocks out some great food with daily specials.
At the junction to Merida and Altagracia you'll find a few NicaTipica places and further down the hill just at the start of the beach you'll find Hotel Istiam. Of the 2 on the junction I can make no comment as I havent eaten there, but they do sell food.
Hotel Istiam is right on the beach and very convienient for that as its the only place to eat at the Santa Cruz end of the beach. Food is Nica Tipica but they do have cold beer!
Villa Paraiso - The most popular upmarket hotel at santa Domingo beach. It has a superb location on the beach and is a good place to eat but a little pricey. The food is posh Nicatipica and done quite well. There's stiill tomato sauce on the rice though.
At Santa Domingo there are a number of eating options to suit all budgets. Its pretty much all Nica Tipica fare except for the new 'Natural' place at the very end of the beach which has more variety.
Music
Live Music isnt commonplace in Nicaragua. We're trying to change that on Ometepe and we've been fortunate enough to get people playing at Cafe Campestre every Saturday we've been open. Music is supplied by local musicians or travelers. We are always looking for new musicians to play, so if you're interested in playing then we'd love to have you in for a session. Please contact us if you're interested.
Occasionally you'll get live music in Moyogalpa or Altagracia but its rare, otherwise when you here live music what you're almost certainly hearing are Evangelical Hymns.
You will however hear lots of music in Nicaragua however and almost certainly you will spend 1 night of your life awake whilst someone blasts out Ragaton all night for their childs 15th Birthday. It can be deafening and no attempt to understand this phenomenon should be made. Its a Nica thing.
